Marset

Marset’s motto is “taking care of light,” and it describes the work precisely: a family-run Barcelona company more interested in what light does to a room than in the object that produces it. BeDESIGN carries Marset in Houston, Texas.

About Marset

Marset began as a family metal foundry in Barcelona and turned fully to lighting in the mid-1960s as Marset Iluminación. Three generations later it remains a family company, led today by CEO Javier Marset, with headquarters and factory in Terrassa, outside Barcelona, and showrooms in Milan, Porto, and New York. In 2015 the company received Spain's National Design Award, the country's highest design recognition, in the company category.

The brand's philosophy is deliberately modest: the lamp is a tool, the light is the product. That thinking has produced some of the most quietly influential pieces in contemporary lighting.

The designers

FollowMe by Inma Bermúdez (2014) was a pioneer of the portable, battery-powered lamp, a category that much of the industry has since followed; Bermúdez went on to receive Spain's National Design Award in 2022. Jordi Canudas's Dipping Light is made by repeatedly dipping a lit bulb into paint, each layer deepening the color, so every lamp is dipped by hand; it won Interior Design's Best of Year in 2018. Christophe Mathieu's Discocó (2008) arranges 35 reflective discs into a glare-free sphere, and his portable Bicoca followed in 2017. Santorini by Sputnik Estudio (2014) reworks the fishing-boat lanterns of the Greek islands. Ginger by Joan Gaspar, in pressed wood and paper laminate, took a Wallpaper* Design Award in 2017, and Theia by Mathias Hahn won at NYCxDesign the same year.

What makes Marset different

Marset designs around the effect of light: where it falls, what it warms, what it leaves alone. The catalog is unusually strong in two categories that matter in Houston: portable lamps that move from dining table to terrace, and a full outdoor range of pendants, floor and wall lamps, and bollards. Because the company still runs its own factory, quality control stays in the family, literally.
