About Molteni&C
Molteni&C was founded in 1934 by Angelo and Giuseppina Molteni in Giussano, in the Brianza district of Lombardy, the same region that produced many of Italy’s most important furniture makers. What began as a small carpentry workshop grew steadily. By the 1950s the company employed more than sixty people.
Angelo Molteni understood early that furniture could be more than a trade. It was a form of cultural production. He organized design competitions with juries that included architects of the calibre of Gio Ponti, Alvar Aalto, and Carlo De Carli. That instinct, pairing industrial manufacturing with design authorship, became the company’s defining characteristic.
Gio Ponti and the Heritage Collection
Molteni&C’s relationship with Gio Ponti, the great Milanese architect, is central to the brand’s identity. In 2012, the company signed a worldwide exclusive agreement with Ponti’s heirs for the re-edition of all furnishings designed by the architect. The Gio Ponti Collection, including the D.154.2 armchair, D.153.1 armchair, D.859.1 table, and the D.555.1 and D.552.2 coffee tables, brought archival designs from the 1950s into production for the first time.
The Heritage Collection extends beyond Ponti to include numbered, limited-edition pieces by Werner Blaser, Yasuhiko Itoh, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa.
Vincent Van Duysen: creative director since 2016
In April 2016, Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen was appointed Creative Director of both Molteni&C and its kitchen brand Dada. Van Duysen’s influence is visible across the entire collection, from the Gliss Master wardrobe system to the VVD kitchen in Ceppo stone and walnut. His work at Molteni&C carries the same quiet materiality he brings to his architecture: restrained, tactile, and precisely proportioned.
Other key designers in the current collection include Nicola Gallizia, Ferruccio Laviani, Foster + Partners, and Ron Gilad.
The Molteni Group
Molteni&C operates within a broader group that includes Dada (kitchens) and UniFor (office and contract furniture). This vertical integration means the company controls everything from material sourcing to final assembly, all of it in Giussano.
