In his search for stylized forms and characterful materials, Nicola Gallizia develops a series of versatile and complementary units that can fit into each other or be set side by side, such as small oval tables, benches and poufs. They are made using and alternating steel, wood, stone, textiles and leather. Color, matter and form are the inspiration and the synthesis of the collection.
The Up Series was designed in 1969 and has remained an iconic design piece within the B&B Italia collection for more than 40 years. The Up5 chair, known for its striking representation of feminine strength and struggle, continues to be meaningful and relevant. It reflects a world sensibility with symbolism, irony, beauty and is truly the epitome of a timeless design.
Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby first project for B&B Italia was Tobi-Ishi, a round dining table clearly inspired by Zen. The design duo are great enthusiasts of Japanese art and culture and the name and concept for this table came from the smooth stones (tobi-ishi) used as ornaments in traditional Japanese Zen gardens. The overhang of the table and the vertical trapezoidal bases set at right angles generate an essential sculptural figure that appears to change shape depending on the point of observation.
A sheet of leather “pinched” in two places at the base: here is where the movement and natural inclination of the headboard originate. It has a comfortable and protective shape with remarkable formal simplicity and very thin sides marked by a lengthwise seam. The bed surface, which can be adjusted to two heights, has an effect of suspension and floating of the super-comfortable mattress.
The design begins from a strongly contemporary seating system distinguished by a careful search for formal balance. The seating system support base is made of crosspiece with rounded steel feet connected to each other by a bar. All this is finished in pewter painted color. This seating system offers a sofa bed (cm 150 x 210), the only one in the B&B Italia collection, available through quick ship program.
