The Gualino Collection

The Gualino Collection by Oscar Tusquets

The Gualino Collection rewards a closer look. There is a sensual pleasure that catches the eye in a design by Oscar Tusquets. Tusquets describes himself as “an architect by training, a designer by adaptation, a painter by vocation, and a writer through the desire to make friends.”

His work sits in innovative extremes. He creates Italian furniture designs that surprise the eye and are functional. With an elegant and iconic silhouette, the Gaulino style is recognisable and constantly striking.

Artisanal wooden structure of the Gaulino chair

“The Gaulino Family was born in 1987. The first member of the family was a chair. The most difficult to design. The one that defined a style.” Oscar Tusquets

That chair was the Gaulino chair. It has an artisanal wooden structure covered with a hand-stitched leather seat. It was designed in 1987, and the chair was his most influential and contemporary piece, that converted into a Spanish design legend. To create ‘Gaulino,’ Tusquets took the imagination and architecture of Antoni Gaudi and blended the sensual lines of Carlo Mollino. The infamous chair is no longer alone. Its fibrous structure has evolved into a series of elegant tables, a variation of chairs, and a stool.

Light, organic Italian furniture silhouettes in the collection

The structures of this Italian furniture are light and organic. Although it looks experimental and artisanal, the Gaulino was Tusquets’ first industrially handcrafted design. However, the textures left by the dyed and varnished ash are unique. Smoked glass tabletops allow you to see the supporting structures and skeletal frames show their distinctive grain. Tusquets’ use of wood, ‘allows each specimen to be different from the others.’ Tusquets created shapes that are sinuous and eccentric.

Why Collectors Seek Out the Gualino Collection

Few collections capture the dialogue between art and function as gracefully as the Gualino Collection. Each silhouette balances on the edge of sculpture, yet every joint and curve is engineered for daily life, a duality that has earned Oscar Tusquets a devoted following among architects and collectors alike. Pieces in this lineage appear in design museums and discerning private homes around the world, and their value has proven remarkably durable across decades.

Provenance is part of the pleasure. The designs are produced by BD Barcelona Design, the storied editor renowned for craftsmanship and faithful execution of artists’ visions, from Tusquets to Salvador Dalí. That pedigree means materials, joinery, and finishes meet exacting standards, and that each piece arrives with a story worth telling at the dinner table it graces.

In our Houston showroom, the Gualino Collection sits comfortably beside contemporary Italian collections, proof of how effortlessly these designs converse across eras. Pair a sculptural chair with a minimalist table and the room gains instant tension and warmth; let one piece stand alone and it becomes the quiet protagonist of the entire space.
