Henzel Studio
Henzel Studio was founded in 1999 in Gothenburg, Sweden, as a family company by artist Calle Henzel and his wife, Åsa Henzel. Calle Henzel’s background as a painter and collage artist is the foundation of the brand: every rug is treated as an extension of his fine-art practice rather than a conventional textile product. All Henzel Studio rugs are hand-knotted using centuries-old weaving techniques by artisan communities in Nepal, and each piece is produced as a one-of-a-kind or limited edition.
In 2013, Joakim Andreasson joined Calle and Åsa Henzel to launch Henzel Studio Collaborations, an ongoing program pairing the brand’s weaving craft with the visual language of contemporary artists. The program debuted in 2014 with twelve limited-edition rugs, unveiled at Barneys New York in a site-specific installation timed to Frieze Art Fair New York. Confirmed artist collaborators include Ashley Bickerton, Sanford Biggers, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Kim Gordon, Mickalene Thomas, John Waters, Richard Prince, Marilyn Minter, and Nan Goldin, along with estate-based collaborations developed with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Tom of Finland Foundation. Each collaboration is described as a parallel work: the artist’s language reinterpreted for the scale and structure of hand-knotting, not a reproduction of an existing piece.
