About Moooi
Moooi was founded in 2001 in Amsterdam by Marcel Wanders, who approached entrepreneur Casper Vissers about marketing a lampshade design, and the two built a company around it. The name is a play on the Dutch word “mooi” — beautiful — with an extra O added for emphasis. The brand debuted internationally that same year at Salone del Mobile in Milan.
Moooi’s ownership has changed hands more than once: Dutch furniture group LENSVELT took a minority stake in 2002, and B&B Italia acquired 50% of the company in 2006. Wanders and Vissers bought back full ownership from B&B Italia in January 2015, and Vissers stepped down as CEO later that year after fourteen years, handing the role to Robin Bevers. The company is headquartered in Breda, Netherlands, and 2026 marks its 25th anniversary, celebrated with a showcase at Milan Design Week.
The designers
Marcel Wanders remains the company’s owner and art director, and designs for the brand himself. Bertjan Pot, one of Moooi’s longest-running collaborators, designed the Random Light and Non-Random Light — a pair that plays hand-wound versus machine-programmed construction against each other in the same silhouette — along with the Carbon Chair and Smoke Chair. More recent collaborators include Yves Béhar, whose Peaks sofa launched at Milan Design Week 2026, and Sjoerd Vroonland, designer of the Timber Tones collection.
