Desalto
Desalto is an Italian furniture company from Cantù, in the Brianza district of the Como region, an area long associated with fine furniture making. Its origins date to 1963, when the Orsenigo family founded ORMA, an artisanal workshop specialized in classic metal furnishings. In 1990, the four Orsenigo brothers launched Desalto as a modern design brand, combining the family’s metalworking expertise with industrial precision and a rigorously minimalist aesthetic. Today the company, led by Mirko Orsenigo and Gianpaolo Nespoli, produces tables, seating, storage systems, small tables, and outdoor pieces defined by material experimentation, essential lines, and a balance of industrial process with aesthetic refinement.
Several Desalto designs have become contemporary icons. The Clay table by Marc Krusin, presented at the Salone del Mobile in 2015, balances its top on two cones that meet at a minimal contact point, and earned both the Good Design Award and the Red Dot Award in 2016. The Helsinki table system, designed by Caronni + Bonanomi in 1995, is a knock-down classic built on a slender 30 x 30 mm steel frame with die-cast joints that has grown into a full family for home, office, and outdoor use, including extending versions. The stackable Sand chair by Pocci + Dondoli (2002) pairs a die-cast aluminum frame with a slim polypropylene seat and is also offered in outdoor and Sand Air variants, while the Element tables by Tokujin Yoshioka (2013) and the bent-steel Softer Than Steel collection by Nendo reflect the brand’s ongoing collaborations with leading international designers — a roster that also includes Piero Lissoni, Arik Levy, Elisa Ossino, Kensaku Oshiro, and Guglielmo Poletti.
