Poltrona Frau in Houston: Leather, Craft, and the Pieces on Our Floor

Poltrona Frau in Houston comes down to one material and one century. The company was founded in Turin in 1912 by Renzo Frau, and the name is a plain description of what it set out to do. Poltrona is Italian for armchair. Frau was the founder’s surname. More than a hundred years later, the armchair is still the argument.

This guide is for the person weighing a serious leather piece: where the brand came from, what Pelle Frau actually is, which pieces define the catalog, what the wait looks like, and where to sit on it here. BeDESIGN is Houston’s exclusive Poltrona Frau dealer, and the collection is on our floor at 2016 W Alabama St in Upper Kirby.

A century of armchairs

Renzo Frau was born in Cagliari, Sardinia, in 1881. He moved to Turin as a young man and began upholstering armchairs. By 1912 he had established a company that carried his name and the craft that defined it. It was, from the start, a declaration of focus. He made armchairs, and he made them extraordinarily well.

In 1930 the company produced the Vanity Fair armchair, designed by an anonymous internal team. It became the signature piece and has been in continuous production ever since. The Chester sofa, Poltrona Frau’s reading of the Chesterfield tradition in Italian leather, followed and remains equally recognizable.

During those early decades the brand furnished the Italian Parliament, La Scala opera house, and the Quirinale presidential palace. Those were not decorative contracts. They required furniture that could take decades of daily use and still hold its presence in the room. That standard became the baseline, and it is the reason the brand reads as institutional rather than fashionable.

“Poltrona Frau is a statement. Everyone knows it. Their leatherwork is legendary, but they don’t stop there.”

That is our co-founder Adrian Dueñas, writing on our own Poltrona Frau page. The second half of the sentence is the part people miss. The leather is the headline, and the construction underneath it is why the piece is still worth sitting in twenty years later.

What Pelle Frau actually is

Pelle Frau is the company’s proprietary leather, processed and colored at its own facility. It is full-grain, sourced from European cattle, and available in more than 100 colors. The tanning and finishing processes were developed by the company’s internal research team to hit a specific balance: soft enough to feel comfortable the moment you sit down, structured enough to hold its shape over decades.

It is worth being clear that this is not a marketing term. Pelle Frau is a distinct material with its own supply chain, processing standards, and quality controls, and every Poltrona Frau piece uses it. When designers specify this brand, the leather is usually the reason.

It is also the reason this is a showroom decision rather than a screen decision. More than 100 colors means the choice happens in front of the swatches, under the same light, with two candidates next to each other. Leather has a temperature and a smell and a way of taking light that a photograph removes completely.

The pieces that define the catalog

Vanity Fair and Chester

The two historic pieces, both anonymous in authorship and both still in the line. Vanity Fair is the armchair the company is known for, in continuous production since 1930. Chester is the sofa, and it is the clearest demonstration of what Italian leatherwork does to a very English form. If you want to understand the house quickly, sit in one of each, back to back.

Archibald and Grantorino

Beginning in the 1980s, Poltrona Frau moved beyond its anonymous in-house tradition and began working with outside architects and designers. The Archibald armchair and the Grantorino sofa, both by Jean-Marie Massaud, are among the most specified pieces in the current catalog. They are also the easiest entry point for a contemporary room that wants the leather without the historical silhouette.

The current design roster

Alongside Massaud, the collection includes work by Roberto Lazzeroni, GamFratesi, and Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. The brand runs external collaborations alongside its internal craft tradition rather than replacing one with the other. You can see how the pieces sit against the rest of our floor on our lounge chairs and armchairs page and our sofas page, and the full international line is on Poltrona Frau’s own site.

Tolentino, and how the pieces are built

Poltrona Frau has manufactured in Tolentino, in the Marche region of central Italy, since 1962. The factory also houses the Poltrona Frau Museum. Leather cutting is done by machine, because consistency across a hide matters more than romance at that stage, and upholstery is completed by hand. Every piece passes through the hands of artisans trained inside the company.

In 2014 the brand became part of the Haworth Group, which also includes Cassina and Cappellini. The brand kept its operational independence in Tolentino. One practical consequence for clients here: because Poltrona Frau shares a parent group with Cassina, we can help coordinate pieces across both brands on projects that need it.

Lead times, and the honest math

Poltrona Frau is handcrafted in Tolentino, and lead times typically run 10 to 16 weeks depending on the piece and the leather selection. We give you a detailed timeline with every custom quote rather than a number you have to interpret.

Select models are available sooner. The current Poltrona Frau Quick Ship 2025 catalog is on our Quick Ship page, with delivery estimated at about four to six weeks depending on stock availability. A piece already on our showroom floor can be in your home in one to two weeks. The trade is the usual one: quick ship narrows the choices, not the quality, and if the available specification is already right for your room, waiting longer buys you nothing.

Where to see Poltrona Frau in Houston

Our showroom at 2016 W Alabama St is where the leather question gets settled. Sit in the piece, run your hand across two colors of Pelle Frau under the same light, and see how a hide reads against your own floor plan rather than against a studio background.

Bring a floor plan if you have one, and bring the pieces the new one has to live with, even as photographs. Complimentary design consultations include space planning and layout, so you leave knowing what fits whether or not you buy that day. We are at 2016 W Alabama St, Houston, TX 77098, open Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 11am to 5pm, with Sundays available by appointment. You can reach us at (713) 623-1177.
