Paola Lenti Houston: Color, Textiles, and Outdoor Furniture That Does Not Look Like It

Paola Lenti Houston: Color, Textiles, and Outdoor Furniture That Does Not Look Like It

Paola Lenti Houston comes down to a question about color and weather, in that order. Most outdoor furniture answers the weather and ignores the color. Paola Lenti does it the other way around, and has since 2003, which is why the pieces end up in rooms where nobody calls them outdoor furniture.

This guide is for the person deciding whether Paola Lenti belongs on a patio, a terrace, or inside the house: where the company came from, what its fabrics are, how Francesco Rota’s shapes work, what the wait looks like, and what to ask before you order. BeDESIGN is Houston’s exclusive Paola Lenti dealer, and we carry the full indoor and outdoor collections at 2016 W Alabama St in Upper Kirby.

Who is Paola Lenti?

Paola Lenti was born in 1958 in Alessandria, in Piedmont. She studied at the Politecnico di Milano and worked as an image coordinator and graphic designer for fashion houses before she started her own company in 1994. She put it in Meda, the Brianza town that is also home to Flexform, because Meda is a furniture-making town and she wanted to be in one.

Her first products were rugs. That detail explains most of what followed. Paola Lenti is, at its core, a textile company that makes furniture, and a textile company thinks about yarn, weave, and dye before it thinks about a frame.

Her younger sister, Anna Lenti, joined as CEO in 2000. In 2009 the company moved into larger premises in Meda, where it still operates. It remains privately held.

A textile company that makes furniture

The company develops its fabrics in-house, and they are proprietary to the brand. For outdoor use they are UV-resistant, water-repellent, and colorfast, and they are meant to keep the softness and depth of color you expect from an interior textile.

That last part is the point. A fabric can survive weather and still feel like a tarp. Paola Lenti started its outdoor collection in 2003 on the premise that outdoor furniture should look and feel like indoor furniture, and the company built its own yarns and fabrics to make that true. The approach has been widely imitated since. The people who did it first still make it.

Paola Lenti Houston: what the climate asks of a fabric

Houston gives a fabric four things to deal with: sun, humidity, rain, and a patio season that does not really end. Those are the conditions the brand’s outdoor textiles are engineered for: UV resistance, water repellency, colorfast dyes.

We would add one honest note. The fabric is one half of the decision. The other half is where the piece sits. Full afternoon sun on a west-facing terrace and a covered porch are different jobs, and we ask about the exposure before we talk about the color. We can advise on the material selection for your particular application, and that conversation is easier with a photograph of the space.

Color is the reason to come in

Where most outdoor furniture defaults to neutral tones, Paola Lenti offers a range closer to fashion than to furniture: deep greens, terracottas, blues, and layered patterns produced through the brand’s own textile research.

A range like that is impossible to judge on a screen. A green changes with the light and with the stone it sits next to, and a terracotta that looks warm in a catalog can look flat on a gray patio. Color is also where people lose their nerve and order the safe one. We would rather you stood in front of the actual fabric, in daylight if possible, with the other materials from your project in your hand.

Paola Lenti was the first brand I truly believed in, and to this day, they remain the most distinctive proposition in interior design.

Francesco Rota and the shapes

In 1997 Paola Lenti began working with the designer Francesco Rota, and the collaboration has continued for nearly three decades. Rota has designed many of the brand’s best-known pieces, turning the company’s textile work into furniture: generous proportions, soft geometries, and structures that put the experience of touch first.

Generous is a word worth taking literally here. These are pieces drawn to be sat in for a long time, and they carry scale. Measure the space before you fall for the sofa, and then measure it again, because a piece with these proportions needs room around it to look the way it does in the photograph.

Indoors, too

The collection is not only for outdoor use. The company is increasingly specified for interior pieces where textile expression is the priority, and the rugs, which are where the company started, work in rooms of every kind. A designer choosing Paola Lenti for a living room is making the same argument the brand makes about the terrace: the material is the design.

For terraces, resort pools, and garden rooms where outdoor furniture is not allowed to look like outdoor furniture, it is a short list. You can see what we mean on our outdoor sofas page, and the outdoor rugs are worth seeing in person for the same reason the color is.

What the wait looks like

Paola Lenti furniture is made to order in Italy, with your choice of fabric, color, and configuration, and every order is custom-quoted. Lead times typically run 10 to 16 weeks depending on the piece and the fabric. We give you a detailed timeline with the quote, and a piece already on our showroom floor can be in your home in one to two weeks.

That is the honest math. Ten to sixteen weeks is long enough that the decision belongs at the start of a project, not at the end of one. If the terrace is being built now, the furniture should be ordered now.

Questions to ask before you order

  • Where will it sit, and how many hours of direct sun does that spot get?
  • Is the fabric I am holding the exact fabric and colorway that will be made?
  • What is the lead time for this configuration in this fabric, in writing?
  • What are the finished dimensions, and does the room allow for them with space to walk around?
  • Does the quote include delivery, and who is responsible if the piece needs adjusting?

Those questions work at any store. They work better when the dealer works directly with the brand, which we do on custom orders, trade pricing, and project specification.
