2027 Design Trends We Are Watching, and What They Look Like on Our Floor in Houston

2027 Design Trends We Are Watching, and What They Look Like on Our Floor in Houston

The 2027 design trends worth your attention were on the floor in Milan in April, and we were there, as we are every April. Salone del Mobile 2026 drew 316,000 visitors to more than 1,900 exhibitors, according to Surface Magazine, and what the houses showed there sets the direction for the year ahead. We walk the fair every year for one reason, which is to decide what goes on our floor. This guide is the short version: five directions we think will matter in Houston in 2027, who reported each one, and which pieces at BeDESIGN, 2016 W Alabama St, Houston, TX 77098, already show them.

Seating that holds you

Surface’s wrap-up of the fair described sofa cushions as “thoroughly stuffed and puffed,” arranged in the insular way of the midcentury conversation pit, with large curved sectionals in booth after booth. B&B Italia marked its return to Salone after a 25-year absence with a booth designed by Formafantasma, and the piece visitors lined up to sit in was a Vincent Van Duysen outdoor chair from a new modular seating system: deep cushions in a simple wood frame. Italian trade coverage of the fair added that modular upholstery is the most requested category right now, and that B&B Italia’s Erica sofas by Antonio Citterio gained curved elements and high backs.

None of this is new to our floor. Flexform’s Groundpiece, introduced in 2001, built its reputation on a low profile, generous depth, and goose-down cushions. B&B Italia’s Camaleonda, Mario Bellini’s modular system from 1970, was re-released in 2020 to immediate demand. We are Houston’s exclusive dealer for Flexform, B&B Italia, and Molteni&C, and the modular sofas on the floor are the version of this trend you can measure. Seat depth is the whole argument.

Outdoor that looks like indoor

The same Italian coverage said B&B Italia’s most interesting news was not inside at all: the Tufty-Time 20 Outdoor, an exterior version of Patricia Urquiola’s modular system. Paola Lenti has worked from that premise since 2003, when it launched an outdoor collection on the idea that outdoor furniture should look and feel like indoor furniture, with fabrics the company develops itself.

Houston is the use case. A covered terrace here is a room for most of the year, and the pieces that work on it are the ones built to be sat in the way a living room sofa is. We are Houston’s exclusive Paola Lenti dealer and carry the full B&B Italia outdoor collection; see the outdoor sofas page. Bring a photo of the terrace and the direction it faces.

Color comes back: orange, blue, and clay

Surface called orange the color of the fair, mostly a muted tangerine, with neutrals still plentiful but color everywhere. WGSN and Coloro named Luminous Blue their Colour of the Year for 2027, with Energy Orange for furniture and lighting and a neutral they call Clay, which they expect to be drenched from floor to ceiling. Homes & Gardens’ list of 2027 trends, published in October, leads with layered, tonal rooms and pale green as the new neutral. The 1stDibs survey of designers for 2026 found chocolate brown the most cited color and burgundy three times as popular as in 2022.

Forecasts disagree on the shade and agree on the move: away from one-note gray and toward warmth. On our floor that is Paola Lenti, whose color range comes from its own textiles, and Poltrona Frau, whose Pelle Frau leather is made at the company’s own facility in over 100 colors. Our advice is the same for all of them. Decide color in daylight, with the swatch next to the floor, the wall, and the other pieces it has to live with.

2027 design trends that are positions, not seasons

The most useful idea from Milan was not a shape or a color. Poltrona Frau built its 2026 presentation on a theme it called True Over Time: furniture should evolve without losing its identity, building a memory rather than chasing seasonal novelty. The collection carried it out with the Archibald Sofa System by Jean-Marie Massaud, an extension of a family already in production, the LieLow bedroom collection with Faye Toogood, and the Albero GFF 100 bookcase for the centenary of Gianfranco Frattini. WGSN tied its Clay color to products designed for longer lifespans.

Whether it’s the flawless designs unveiled in Milan or their impeccable upholstery, indoor or outdoor, Poltrona Frau is iconic.

Adrian Dueñas, Co-founder, BeDESIGN

We are Houston’s exclusive Poltrona Frau dealer. The house has made its furniture in Tolentino since 1962, and the Vanity Fair armchair has been in production since 1930. That is what a position looks like: a piece you can still buy, and still recognize, decades after the trend that introduced it.

The 1970s, the 1990s, and the room without a screen

Surface reported that the 1970s still inform the forms, the saturated palettes and low-slung furniture of that decade, and that the 1990s are catching up. Homes & Gardens put “analogue” rooms at the top of its 2027 list: game rooms and reading corners, with designers reporting clients who ask for homes that are intuitive to live in rather than full of new technology. Maison&Objet in Paris in September made the same point with objects: games and boxes in marble, walnut, and leather, made to be used and left out.

On our floor the 1970s are not a reference. They are in the archive. Zanotta‘s Sacco, the first bean bag chair, dates from 1968 and is still in production; the Mezzadro stool by the Castiglioni brothers was designed in 1957, and 336 Zanotta pieces sit in the permanent collections of 60 museums. Giorgetti brings the wood and the hand finishing the forecasters keep describing. We are an authorized Zanotta dealer and Houston’s exclusive Giorgetti dealer.

What Adrian saw in Milan

We asked our co-founder Adrian Dueñas five questions about Salone del Mobile 2026. His answers, in his words.

What did you notice first, before you read anything about it?

The creativity and the attention to detail. Every brand puts so much thought into every vignette, every material and every presentation. That commitment to perfection is visible not only inside the fair but throughout Milan during Salone. The entire city comes alive with design and people from around the world. That energy is what strikes me first.

The one piece you would put on our floor tomorrow if the house would ship it?

We already have so many of the pieces I love on our floor. I am especially excited about our latest introductions, including Poltrona Frau’s Archibald chair and Giorgetti’s HAG chair. I also love B&B Italia’s Camaleonda and Flexform’s Loungescape. But if I have to choose one, it is the Groundpiece sofa by Flexform. It represents the timeless comfort, proportions and craftsmanship I want our clients to experience every day.

Which trend will Houston clients actually buy, and which will they not?

Houston is an incredibly diverse city, and there is no single Houston taste. The market can lean traditional, but our clients appreciate timeless design, exceptional materials and pieces with lasting value. They respond to beautiful wood, sophisticated upholstery and versatile furniture that will feel relevant for years. That is why collections such as Flexform’s Groundpiece and Loungescape resonate. Houston will embrace color and expressive design when they are thoughtfully integrated. Trends that are purely decorative or fleeting are less compelling than craftsmanship and longevity.

Orange: yes or no for a Houston living room?

One hundred percent yes. Orange immediately evokes Hermès and the beauty of rich leather, and Houston has embraced it. We have incorporated orange leather, statement cushions, accent pieces and even dining chairs, especially paired with beautiful wood. It adds warmth, personality and sophistication. Orange is a yes for Houston, a yes for design and absolutely a yes right now.

Is any 2026 introduction already here?

Yes. The Tufty-Time 20 Outdoor by B&B Italia is already on our showroom floor. We also have pieces from the new 2026 Giorgetti and Maserati collaboration and new introductions from Poltrona Frau. This is a wonderful moment to visit BeDESIGN and experience some of the excitement of Salone del Mobile 2026 right here in Houston.

What we are not doing

We do not restyle the floor every April. We buy positions, which is why the houses above have been on our floor for years and will be next year. A trend you can see in person is a trend you can judge. The Tufty-Time 20 Outdoor is on the floor now. If there is another 2026 introduction you want to see, ask us, and we will tell you whether it is on the floor, on order, or still only in Milan.

Questions to ask before you buy into a 2027 trend

  • Is this a trend or a position? Has the house kept the piece in production, and for how long?
  • Does the color survive your room’s light? Have you seen the swatch in daylight next to the floor and the wall?
  • Is it modular, and can the configuration change when the room does?
  • Who designed it, and when? A piece with a named designer and a date tends to outlast one without.
  • Will it still be in production in five years, so that a damaged element can be replaced rather than the whole piece?

Those questions work at any store. They work better where the full collections are on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2027 design trends?

The reports from Salone del Mobile 2026, Maison&Objet, WGSN, and Homes & Gardens point the same way: deep modular seating; outdoor furniture that looks like indoor furniture; color returning, led by orange, blue, and clay; furniture bought as a long-term position rather than a seasonal look; and rooms planned around conversation and time away from screens.

What is the 2027 color of the year?

WGSN and Coloro named Luminous Blue their Colour of the Year for 2027, alongside Energy Orange, Pop Pink, Meadowland Green, and Clay. Surface Magazine reported that the signature color at Salone del Mobile 2026 was orange, mostly a muted tangerine.

Are curved sofas still in style for 2027?

Yes. Surface Magazine reported that large curved sectionals and overstuffed cushions dominated the booths at Salone del Mobile 2026. The caution is proportion: a curved sofa has to fit the room, which is a tape-measure decision, not a trend decision.

Is outdoor furniture a 2027 design trend?

Outdoor furniture that looks and feels like indoor furniture is. B&B Italia’s most discussed 2026 introduction was the Tufty-Time 20 Outdoor, an exterior version of Patricia Urquiola’s modular system, and Paola Lenti has built its outdoor collection on that premise since 2003. BeDESIGN is Houston’s exclusive dealer for both houses.

Which brands at BeDESIGN fit the 2027 trends?

Flexform, B&B Italia, and Molteni&C for deep modular seating; Paola Lenti and B&B Italia for outdoor; Paola Lenti and Poltrona Frau for color; Poltrona Frau and Giorgetti for furniture made to last; Zanotta for the 1970s archive. BeDESIGN is Houston’s exclusive dealer for all of those except Zanotta, where we are an authorized dealer.
